To do this, we must recognize that much of what we have learned about movement consequences or outcomes has come from scholarship on the effects of movements on state targets. Nonetheless, this scholarship is useful as we begin to understand the effects of movements on corporations. I begin this chapter by offering a working definition of what I mean by social movements, contentious politics, and private politics. I argue that all three of these terms are essential to understanding anticorporate activism and its effects on corporations.

6 The bulk of research on outcomes examines how movements impact the state. The most commonly studied type of state response is a policy change; for example, McCammon, Campbell, Granberg, and Mowery (2001) examine how women’s suffrage activism, organization, and framing impacted state-level women’s suffrage laws (see also King, Cornwall, and Dahlin 2005) and Soule and her colleagues (Soule and Olzak 2004; I use the terms “outcomes,” “impacts,” and “consequences” interchangeably throughout this book.

Note that most of this work has implicitly or explicitly conceptualized anticorporate activism as private politics, though at times it may have been more accurately conceptualized as contentious politics.
