We hope, therefore, to avoid the wrath of the gods by presenting and analysing the material as impartially and rigorously as possible. 37 In the pages that follow we shall revisit the different factors that, in some way or another, have contributed to the formation and emergence of the genre, starting with the literary tradition. We shall underline the importance of that tradition, and the endless dialogue between innovation and imitation, in the construction of the novel. We shall point to similarities and differences between the novel and other genres.
Only political utopia would survive in the doctrine of the Stoics and Roman political theory. Nevertheless, escapism persists in the tradition of the bucolic. An example is the Euboic by Dio of Prusa, a first-person narration containing a eulogy of the good life, set on an island visited much earlier by the author. Yet to what extent are Greek novels not simply fantastic constructs of an ideal society, an Erotopolis founded on a single emotion, love, before which all men are rendered equal? A world in which love is the overlor and the best subject is the best lover?
