In these latter writings his style is one of personal invective, particularly in his treatment of the friars who had attacked his work on the Eucharist published in 1379; in this volume, however, even his harsh accusation that the pope is Antichrist is conditional, that is, if the pope continues to claim unlawful dominion. Shorter than most of the other treatises in the series, this work on simony contains less repetition and fewer digressions. Thus it can serve as a good introduction to the principal ideas of its author because his theories on dominion, the Bible, church, papacy, and kingship are assumed as premises for his analysis of simony.
