However, the full extent of the actual loss is very rarely known, particularly when pitting corrosion, occurring as a result of chloride contamination, can cause a significant loss of section with little visual evidence. Consequently, where pitting corrosion is suspected, it would be necessary to expose the reinforcement and to assess the extent, if any, of the pitting corrosion and the resulted loss of steel cross-section.
