Todd had been the first non–football player in Old Mill to be prom king, which had been a rather big deal, especially since his queen was the football captain’s ex-girlfriend. I looked at the yellowing photograph. Todd looked slightly goofy, like the stereotypical country boy, with his sunburned nose and sandy blond hair in his eyes. A raw-looking cut outlined half of his upper lip, making his smile lopsided. I couldn’t remember if the cut was from a hockey game or, more likely, that late in the spring, a fight.

Watch this: Knocked from his horse by a hatchet thrown into his shoulder, this amazing soldier gets back up and—hatchet still entrenched—cuts the rebel across the face with his sword and then runs him through. What a man. ” We watched the scene again, and Jacob said, “Whoa. Whoa. Rewind that. Now listen: Do you hear that hatchet hit and embed in flesh? ” Todd fast-forwarded until the credits, stopping at a huge three-column list of stunt workers. “There he is! ” We cheered. Jacob fast-forwarded farther and stopped at assistant sound editor.

Instead I had battered, Traveling Light / 27 bloodstained toe shoes hanging from my bed frame and ballet posters thumbtacked to the wall, many with cast signatures scribbled across them. The room looked oddly tidy now. Neither of us had ever made our beds or hung up clothes. Our door had mostly been kept shut because Grandma Anna said she didn’t want to look at our mess. Todd’s door was always open, unless he was in there. I leaned in his door frame. A poster of Mario Lemieux and another of Wayne Gretzky were evenly spaced and secured to the wall over his bed.
