311) In Shapere (1986b), I have pointed out that beliefs which are not entirely free from doubt are often employed as reasons in science, and detailed the circumstances in which such employment is legitimate. But the plentiful availability of beliefs which are free from specific and compelling doubt, and the sufficiency of such beliefs as bases of scientific reasoning in a great many cases, must not be dismissed lightly.
