That’s a very simple example, but it is exactly the kind of outcome that happens when we don’t treat a project as a whole system, embedded in the interdependent systems of which our planet Earth is made. The process itself must change. Just as the old method of operating mirrored the linear thinking of the industrial age, the new process that we’ll describe here mirrors a more holistic, creative way of thinking. We begin with an integrated design charrette. In this new way of operating, we work toward reaching a set of goals by optimizing relationships—in people and systems.
