However, world food price crisis during 2007–2008 showed the threat of high food import dependency in the Caribbean, when food prices rose 83 per cent over the last 3 years. Moreover, the existence of a double burden of malnutrition in the Caribbean (existence of both undernutrition and overweight) increased the interest in the idea of increased food self-reliance as a strategy to improve the food and nutrition security in the region. In fact, proposed food self-reliance strategy for the Caribbean is a strategy based on a mix of public policies aimed to establish national food systems in the context of international trade.
Moreover, contribution of trade to food security occurs in making up the difference between production and consumption needs, reducing supply variability, fostering economic growth, making more efficient use of the world resources and permitting production to take place in those regions most suited to it (FAO 2000). For instance, while competition with food imports can have disruptive effects on local producers, it can stimulate productivity-enhancing changes and innovations in domestic production and associated supply chains (FAO 2015b).
