Since the occurrence and d i s t r i b u t i o n of defect s i t e s may give a clue about the operating synthesis mechanism ( c f . the introductory comments and Figure 1) they have been studied i n closer d e t a i l . F i r s t , the dependence of the number of defects on the A l con tent was determined by Si-NMR spectroscopy applied to various ZSM-5 samples having d i f f e r e n t S i / A l r a t i o s . In Table IV these r a t i o s are indicated, together with the percentage i n t e n s i t y of the Si-NMR resonance centered around -103 ppm.

E . 5, which i s a normal value f o r S i - r i c h z e o l i t e synthesis mixtures) the larger part of the s i l i c a t e species present i n solution consists of uncharacter i z e d , polymeric s i l i c a t e s . The values obtained i n the absence of DMSO (lower part of Table III and Figures 2a and 2b are i n good agreement with l i t e r a t u r e findings (14). ch003 1 2 Basic S i l i c a t e Solutions: Dynamics. Exchange reactions between s i l i c a t e s as well as z e o l i t e formation involve condensation and hydrolysis reactions between dissolved s i l i c a t e species.

In this way a S i mass balance over the solution and the s o l i d phase during the s i l i c a l i t e synthesis was obtained. The r e s u l t s are summarized i n Table I, which also gives the r e s u l t s of a s i m i l a r procedure for an analogous synthesis i n the presence of DMSO. In t h i s l a t t e r case, however, we were not able to f i l t e r the solution as thoroughly as i n the f i r s t one, so that at the beginning of the synthesis a minor trace of amorphous material was present.
