345). THE SHAPING OF POSITIVE LEADERSHIP As Luthans and Avolio (2003a) make clear, there is still much to learn about what shapes positive leadership development. What is also clear, however, is the need to recognize the potential of positive leadership as expressed through an authentic style in building sustainable futures and sustainable performance (Avolio and Gardner 2005). The urgency of the challenges facing organizations has led others to explore the notion of positive leadership. Researchers have over the last decade, for example, been attracted to, and given attention to, “spiritual leadership” in organizations, and its power in giving meaning and purpose.

These three forces are: (a) internationalization and global competition, which continues to bring dramatic and complex changes to the nature and structure of work, the distribution of capital, knowledge and skills, labor and consumer markets, where work is organized, where it is located, how it is managed, the leadership styles required, the opportunities to work, and the way in which we want to work and live. Economies, too, have changed from being based on manufacturing and production to being based on information and 33 WELL-BEING AND WORK services.

Our aim now is to go forward and discuss the work and well-being relationship in more detail, exploring both positive and negative aspects of work, and the range of emotions and behaviors, both positive and negative, that best capture a more contemporary understanding of well-being. 32 CHAPTER 2 THE CHANGING NATURE OF WORK AND ITS CHALLENGES We begin this chapter by reviewing the changing nature of work, and use this as the context for the chapter that follows, to better understand how well traditional notions of work and well-being capture and express this changing landscape.
