Even before black boys encounter a genocidal street culture, they have been assaulted by the cultural genocide taking place in early childhood educational institutions where they are simply not taught. Committed to creating books that represent young black males and place them at the center of universal stories, I wrote a children’s book called Be Boy Buzz, which is a positive representation of the holistic selfhood of boys. The boys represented are black. The illustrator of the book is a white male.

Often black males choose crime to avoid the hierarchy in the workforce that places them on the bottom. As Ice T explains: “Crime is an equal-opportunity employer. It never discriminates. Anybody can enter the field. You don’t need a college education. D. You don’t have to be any special color. You don’t need white people to like you. You’re self- 28 WE REAL COOL employed. As a result, criminals are very independent people. They don’t like to take orders. That’s why they get into this business. There are no applications to fill out, no special dress codes….

Individual poor and working-class boys who excel academically in the public school system without surrendering their spirit and integrity usually make it because they have an advocate, a parent, parental caregiver, or teacher who intervenes when the biased educational system threatens them with destruction.
