Although the idea of carrying out field research in diverse settings certainly is commendable, the UNRISD and CIFOR procedures seem to assume that deforestation processes vary primarily along continental lines. Geist and Lambin (2001), in their meta-analysis of research on tropical forest cover change, also assume a kind of continental determinism, breaking their studies down into African, Asian, and Latin American subsamples. This assumption is open to empirical question. Given the tremendous variation in the physical settings of tropical forests in Africa, deforestation processes may, for example, vary more between East and central Africa than they do between East Africa and south Asia.

During the 1980s it was present in some, but not all, instances of deforestation. Because the findings for this driving force are inconsistent across the studies, QCA drops it from the minimized expression. This pattern suggests that it is the road building associated with oil fields rather than the oil fields themselves that causes most forest destruction. 2 presents the minimized results for the 1990s. It summarizes the causal conjunctures behind deforestation in two expressions. The second expression cites only one factor, small-scale agriculture as a driving force.

The tables include studies in which the authors have conducted field research or carried out remote sensing analyses of deforestation at any level of aggregation up to and including the nation. 6 These studies provide the empirical bases for the descriptions and explanations of forest cover changes in this book. Readers may want to inquire if I included a particular case study in the analysis and, if so, how I coded the causal forces from that study. Readers can answer these questions by consulting the appendix.
