The range in population is even more spectacular. Most are relatively small. In France several municipalities have no inhabitants; other municipalities have several million inhabitants. Municipalities which have a relatively large population and consist almost entirely of densely populated area, are the more stereotyped concept of municipalities. There are, however, an overwhelmingly greater number of municipal units in the rural area. These municipalities may include one or more hamlets or larger, more densely populated areas.
