Sociologists have written about stigma and tipping points. It is arguable that a household that sends its children to work has to face some stigma for doing so. However, it seems reasonable to assume that the extent of stigma is negatively related to the amount of child labour C H I L D L A B O U R A N D I N T E R N AT I O N A L L A B O U R 27 that occurs in such a society. That is, if child labour is widespread, people will be used to it and not stigmatize quite so strongly those who send their children to work.

So long as we do not attend to this feeling of marginalization, the resentment of the masses will be the breeding ground of terrorism. Is it naïve to expect that the US president can play a genuinely international leadership role? I do not think so. There have been American leaders, like Jimmy Carter, who have tried to keep the larger interests of the world in mind when crafting policy. It is true that to do so is to risk losing some popularity at home, among one’s electorate (as Jimmy Carter must well know).

This means that even if a household is very poor and so in need of supplementing its income by making the children work, it may not be able to find work for the children. If, however, this household happens to own some land, then it does not have to rely on the labour market; it can employ its children on its own land. Coupling this with the fact that, in rural areas, households that have more land are typically wealthier, it is not surprising to find a positive correlation between wealth and child labour.
