Hugo Gressmann's semipopular commentary represents the early form critical method executed with his usual brilliance. Most recently, Hans Joachim Stoebe's very solid commentary on 49 I Samuel shows considerable exegetical skill i n its handling of the narrative material, but does not achieve the sharp cutting edge one might have expec ted Karl Gutbrod 's homiletical commen­ . tary does a fairly good job of addressing the book from a pastor's perspective, but remains inferior to Hertzberg even for this pur­ pose.

Some are quite unusable. It now appears that the writers are allowed great freedom in the format and it is therefore dangerous to generalize regarding future volumes. Even though the price has rem ai ned quite reasonable for the size of the books, one should choose carefully. Fortu nately , several of the authors have broken away from the original concept of a narrow philological and historical orientation. Finally, mention should be made of the several very popu­ lar, even elementary series of commentaries.

Above all, mention should be made of Sam­ uel R. Driver's Notes on the Hebrew Text. This volume does not purport to be a full commentary, but is the finest example in English of the close examination of Hebrew syntaX and text criti­ cism. Henry P. Smith's contribution to the International Critical Commentary was never considered outstanding and has lost most of its value by now. For the student who handles German, Karl Budde's influential commentary on Samuel remains, along with Julius W ellhausen , a classic example of strictly literary critical analysis.
