Early in the life of the Pimlico Connection, students accompanied the pupils who received tutoring (tutees) on visits to the Science Museum (London); but it was not until 1992/3 that a pilot programme was developed to deploy student tutors as interpreters there. This project, and its sequels, are described in detail in Chapter Five. 2 Evaluation: benefits of tutoring—to teachers, tutors and school pupils The benefits to participants in tutoring schemes are now well-documented (Goodlad, 1979; Goodlad and Hirst, 1989, 1990; Topping, 1988).
