Sorghum is classified under the family Poaceae, tribe Andropogoneae, subtribe Sorghinae, genus Sorghum Moench (Clayton and Renvoize 1986). Some authors further divided the genus into five subgenera: sorghum, chaetosorghum, heterosorghum, parasorghum, and stiposorghum (Garber 1950; Celarier 1959). Variation within these five subgenera except the subgenera sorghum has been described (Celarier 1959).
