The cavity is fully ventilated and not limited in size to enable rapid drying of any water crossing the cavity. This is known as the drained-andback-ventilated method. A more sophisticated version of the rainscreen is that where attempts are made to equalise air pressures both within and outside the cavity by carefully controlling both the sizes of the cavity and the sizes of the open joints. There must also be a complete air seal at the back of this cavity. The rain-screen skin catches most of the droplets, and for those few drops which get past the screen, because the cavity is open to the external air though limited in size, the pressure inside and outside is practically equal and there is therefore neither energy nor air stream available to drive the droplets across it to the inner face.

As trees grow, their demand for moisture increases and the root systems extend both laterally and downwards affecting an increasingly large volume of soil. In many clay soils, rainfall during the winter is unable to replenish the moisture extracted by the roots during the summer and a zone of drier soil develops under the tree which can be up to 6 m deep. This desiccation causes the surrounding ground to shrink, resulting in possible subsidence damage to any nearby foundations.

In strong winds, rain droplets may even be moving upwards so that projections may become counter productive. There is very little quantitative information on this issue. 25 m high with a flat roof and positioned near the top of an escarpment 10 m high. 26). But the pattern of protection afforded by the upper overhangs was very different.
